Little Things

When I take my eyes off the hustle and bustle of a jam-packed calendar and notice the little things, life suddenly feels simpler. Taking time to savor small pleasures adds joy to each day. The tyranny of the to-do list fades and being present in this moment becomes the most important thing. Priorities can be re-ordered when I remember to slow down.

Here are a few simple pleasures I have enjoyed in the past few weeks:

Family Time

Time spent with family.

Cuddling a hot mug of tea and enjoying both the scent and taste of a new blend.

Walking down the driveway on a crisp, sunny day to get the mail.

Old Randy and Young Randy

Enjoying a laugh (often on myself, for my gullibility) at a dose of Navajo humor.

Putting on a pair of pants…and realizing I’ve lost more weight by how saggy, baggy my old-favorite has become.

Writing down my thoughts…and having the words all line up “just right.”

Focused Player

Watching one of my children focus on learning new skills—Jakob taming mustangs, Anna playing volleyball…

Savoring the taste of good chocolate melting in my mouth… (Thanks, Nettie!)

Getting a big hug from a child—one of mine, or one of the kids I tutor…

Favorite Musicians

Listening to favorite artists and singing along… (you should hear me “belt it out” when I’m in the truck alone!)

Seeing the “aha moment” on the face of a child I’m teaching.

A phone conversation—whether long or short—with a friend or a grown child or my mom or sisters.

Changing SeasonsNoticing the changing seasons…and the millions of stars in a velvety black night sky…

Discovering a new author…especially if they have written an entire series of books for me to enjoy.

Opening the mailbox…and finding a card from a friend!

I could go on and on, but you get the idea. Have you savored YOUR small moments today? Here’s wishing you great joy in the little things…
