Winter WONDERland

“The first fall of snow is not only an event, it is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another quite different, and if this is not enchantment then where is it to be found?”
~J.B. Priestley

snow + fog = roadside beauty

There are things to be celebrated about each season of the year: the signs of new life in spring, the sunny laid back days of summer, the bright colors and crisp air of fall, and winter? Ahh…winter is my favorite season of all.

I love the cold. I love the bright blue skies (especially here in New Mexico). I love the tang of breathing frozen air and the crunch of snow under my feet. I love the playfulness – kids sledding, my dog bounding through the snow drifts, making snowmen large and small (although that is hard with the dry snow around here), and having snowball fights. An added bonus is that with the arrival of winter comes the preparations for Christmas!

We had a heavy snowfall Monday night…and woke up to an enchanted, sparkly, snow-covered world on Tuesday morning. There was a 2 hour delay for the local school—and Anna still managed to be late when she didn’t want to stop playing in the snow to be cooped up inside all day.

Here are a few photos to show off some of the WONDER of this land when it snows:

mixed up seasons

mixed up seasons...

I think it’s funny when there are still leaves (green ones, at that!) on the trees mixed with the first heavy snowfall!

icicle view

I love this view out the back door — snow covered trees, the petrified-wood stone fence topped with snow, and a beautiful winter scene framed by icicles.

sparkling grass

sparkling grass adds to the WONDER...

I absolutely LOVE walking outside on a sunny morning when even the dead grass is covered with diamond sparkles.

snowy mesas

Snow shows off the mesas.

Mesa views are always beautiful with ever changing colors in the rocks. Snow topped layers just adds to the beauty.

Okay, enough for today. My apologies to those of you who are dreading winter. I don’t really understand why you love hot, sticky, summer more than this beautiful WONDERland of snow…but I’m celebrating the arrival of winter to my part of the world!
