An Art-filled Life

whimsy and bright colors = FUN! (from art competition)

I still haven’t figured out what to do with all the extra free time I have with Anna in school during the day (and Jakob largely independent at this point). I’m not just sitting around eating bon-bons (or Lindt truffles, or Cadbury chocolate bars—thanks, Nettie!), and there is plenty of “busy-work” to be done around here; but, there is a gap in the amount of time needed for responsibilities that I’m trying to figure out how to fill. I want to use time wisely, to use it for “significant” things, whatever that means.

a non-prize-winning picture I really like

I suspect I will be wrestling to define this for awhile longer. In the meantime, I am happily adding artsy things to my life. A week ago, I had the privilege of being a judge for an annual art competition at our local K-8th school. You can see photos of the pictures and read more about it HERE.

One of my sisters sent me some “mad money” to be spent on ME, not just for necessities. I struggled (briefly) with thinking I should use some of it to buy myself new pants since I’ve lost enough weight my old jeans were literally falling off. Then I realized we could and would pay for the pants even if I did not use the me-money. Other practical things came to mind, which I resisted.

I finally spent the money for my own heART: I am going to my first-ever weekend scrapbook retreat soon. This is something I’ve wanted to do for ages, but the money, the opportunity, and someone to enjoy it with, never came together at the same time. Now I’m headed to a rustic location for a really good price with a friend from the local school while Randy agreed to babysit for the weekend. I’ll let you know how it goes!

will YOU join me?

And…I’ve also signed up for a year-long “Life Book” on-line class. With the help of a wide variety of talented artist-instructors, we will complete 15 whimsical mixed-media journal pages to bind into a life-book by the end of the year. I’m quite excited to try new techniques, use new materials, see on-line postings of fellow course-members’ work, and generally have creative FUN throughout the year. More information about the course is HERE. I would love to have you join me! If you are interested, but can’t swing the cost, you could enter a drawing to take the course for free HERE.

I’m still not sure what I “should” be doing with my extra time…but for now I’m choosing to add creativity and art to my life. I’m choosing to live with heART!
